Sommerfesten is an annual music festival held at Giske (population 600), a tiny island off the west coast of Norway. The outdoor festival is free and open to all, and people bring food for everyone to share instead of buying a ticket. In 2009, 15000 people visited Sommerfesten in one day.

    Let's clear up the confusion... it is true that the festival is free of charge, but since it's all peace, love and understanding the festival asks you to make a donation. You choose how much you want to give, or you can just go in without paying a dime. It's your call. Concerning the food thing, ever since the beginning of this summer fest part of the tradition is to bring your own food but to share it amongst everyone. Meaning you bring whatever you like to barbeque, to go with the coffee (like a cake or sweets), crisps, etc. and deliever it to the people handling the food bit. Then they prepare it for you... and you eat it. Or you can have a taste of whatever other people brought with them. Alcohol, water, coffee, soda, etc. you can buy at the bar. And all this I can confirm as I've been involved with this festival for 4 years. There you go... hope it's all clearer to you:) And welcome to the greatest festival on the planet!

    I read something about this, but I don't really get it to be honest XD It's free? What about the food thing? Could someone, preferrably Norwegian, explain this to me? XD I really wanna go!
