By the way, I'm drawing attention to this because I'd rather they fix the problem because live music are the only ways the musicians we love and enjoy can make money are to sell concert tickets and to sell merchandise at shows. But yeah, around back to the right. hop up to the left onto the porch. Easy as pie, the homeless used to do it a lot to steal beers people leave sitting around. That's how I originally learned about it.

if you go around to the right of the building, down by the train tracks, you can cut behind and to the left and there is a chainlink fence that has been pretty much pushed over. Smokers congregate in this area and security always stay right by the door or directly inside the door, but this smoking area is obscured by a brick wall and it's hard to notice a few kids pop up behind the benches. There also is (sometimes on crowded nights) a security guard across the way and in line of sight, but he's a good thirty feet away and there is such a big crowd he can't see through anyway. And those hand stamps are a joke, just smudge black eyeliner on your hand and rub it in, or something red if you are over. I have actually never done this, but have long thought out the logistics. I have only seen security in the smoking area around the corner maybe once or twice. We smoke weed back there all the time or right down the alley. They are very relaxed.

No, they are not announcing set times or dates for any bands aside from She & Him at the Memorial Hall on Sunday. The surprise is supposed to be part of the fun.

Why isn't Superchunk a headliner? hardly makes sense. Look forward to seeing Polvo, destroyer, and I'm real glad that Lou Barlow is coming even if Dinosaur Jr. wont all come.

Buying at least two single day passes. It's dumb they're not announcing who's playing what night. Even if they did, they'd still sell out in a heart beat. Regardless, I'm guaranteed to see some great acts whichever nights I wind up buying tickets to

    April 2009
  • davevegan

I wonder how much single day passes will be. And I bet they get grabbed up just as fast as the five day passes. It would be nice if they were $30, but for some reason I would imagine they will raise it a bit.

Hopefully Pipe will play another show. Probably not.

    April 2009
  • davevegan

Well they were based in Chapel Hill, and Crooked Fingers has released material on merge. That's where the speculation comes from I believe. And they haven't played a show since 2000. And yeah, I think a NMH reunion is just as likely as a Refused reunion or an At the Drive-In reunion.

    April 2009
  • nutop

Archers of Loaf weren't on Merge. A Neutral Milk Hotel reunion would be cool, but I have a hard time believing that it would happen.

    April 2009
  • davevegan

And I won't even get into all of the conjecture about an Archers of Loaf or Neutral Milk Hotel reunion. I know that it's a one in a million shot, but if either ended up playing some people would probably jump off a bridge for missing that opportunity. If the single day passes are eaten up as quickly as the five day passes, then it seems I will be sleeping in the parking lot in front of Amante's and Visart. I wonder what city regulations are about setting up tents in public areas. And I wonder how closely they will be watching the broken gate next to the train tracks out back next to the smoking porch. I know it's shitty, but desperate times calls for desperate measures and I am dying to know about all of these so-called "surprises." I've been reading the Merge forums and I think most of the tickets were grabbed by kids outside of North Carolina...people are coming from everywhere for this. Even if I can't get inside, I'm sure the party will be rocking in the lot. Crossing my fingers.

I understand the high demand for this festival, and I totally agree that a smaller venue like Cat's Cradle will provide a more intimate environment for the crowd. But with so many big names; especially the NC locals who older "scenesters" (for lack of a better word) would give a left nut to see (thinking Superchunk, Polvo, Pipe, Spent...bands who aren't really around anymore)...and huge (to me) national acts like Spoon, M. Ward & Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes set?), and Destroyer who people would go out of their way to see regardless. It seems that on such a small capacity that they would be losing a lot of potential cash flow. If they just set up a stage in the Town Commons like they did for Arcade Fire last year, or somewhere comparable outdoors, a lot more fans who didn't have funds or didn't anticipate that the tickets would sell out in an hour would be provided a chance to see their favorite artists without camping out in front of Cat's Cradle until 10pm every day for a crapshoot.

    April 2009
  • davevegan

well that certainly sold out fast.
