What a night. Cold and blustery outside, yet warm and inviting inside Murry's. The Tierney Sutton Band played a wonderful set of music, and they are a band, not just a backing band for Sutton's amazing vocals.
Sutton is the face of the band, but all are outstanding players and as a cohesive whole, are terrific. Christian Jacob is a stellar jazz pianist and he was the biggest eye opener for me. I went fully prepared to be blown away by Sutton's vocals in a live setting. And I was. However, Jacob's playing really caught my attention.
Murry's is a small, intimate setting and they played a small, intimate show. Their slightly irreverent approach to Jazz standards means they go out of their way to bring a new interpretation to them, a new way of experiencing the songs, not a way of belittling them. Indeed, the love for the material was evident in the selection of what was played. Sutton's voice is as much of an instrument as Jacob's piano or Kevin Axt's bass. …
