Beschreibung

Composer Max Richter brings Vivaldi’s timeless violin concertos, The Four Seasons, to new generations of music-lovers with a version for the 21st century.

Taking textures, melodies and harmonies from Vivaldi’s concertos, Richter explores Baroque ideas to discover their contemporary resonances, from minimalist propulsion to eerie electronica. Vivaldi Recomposed is as elegant, as breathtakingly virtuosic and as evocative as the originals, translated respectfully into a dazzling new showcase for violinist Yuki Numata and New York City’s Wordless Music Orchestra.

Part of Deutsche Grammophon’s Recomposed series – a strand of specially-commissioned albums revisiting classical works for contemporary listeners – Richter’s Four Seasons preserves the elegant beauty of the originals, but subtly modifies them with unexpected cadences, loops, counter-melodies and atmosphere, bringing to life the birds of spring, summer lightning and wintery storms.

Richter was fascinated by Vivaldi’s 1725 composition because “The Four Seasons is an omnipresent piece of music and like no other part of our musical landscape. I hear it in the supermarket regularly, am confronted with it in adverts or hear it as muzak when on hold.” The biggest challenge for the British composer was to “create a new score, an experimental hybrid, that constantly references ‘Vivaldi’ but also ‘Richter’ and that is current but simultaneously preserves the original spirit of this great work”.

Richter’s ballet score for choreographer Wayne MacGregor’s INFRA was also inspired by classical music, a bleakly beautiful set of songs by 19th century Viennese composer Franz Schubert. Richter says, “I started thinking about making a piece on the theme of journeys. Like a road movie. Or a traveler’s notebook. Or like the second unit in a film – when the scene has been played, and the image cuts away to the landscape going by. This started me thinking about Schubert’s devastating and haunting Winterreise (Winter Journey), so I used some melodic material from Schubert as a found object in parts of my new piece”.

Reworked into music for the concert hall, INFRA, in the words of one critic, is “precisely balanced between accessibility and depth, desolation and joy, melody and noise”.

Experience Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with new ears or encounter it for the first time and discover magical INFRA in the stunning surrounds of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall at Melbourne Recital Centre.
