Let me start by saying I am not a Prince fanboy. Although I have a fondness for Prince because of his huge success during my formative years in the 80s I have not paid much attention to him since. Although I respected his musical talents I wasn't really connecting with the newer music I was hearing from him.
As you can see from this I go to a lot of concerts. Usually I'm pretty good at guessing how much I will enjoy them. Although of course sometimes I am pleasantly surprised, and sometimes I am disappointed.
Had you shown me the setlist for Prince's show on Saturday night I would have been disappointed as it didn't have a lot of music the casual fan would be familiar with.
So was I disappointed? Quite the opposite! Somehow, playing mostly music I was not familiar for and hearing them for the first time Prince and his ensemble blew my expectations out of the water! It started on shaky ground as Prince allowed band member Andy Allo to essentially sing an opening set of five songs. …
