Damon Albarn has sure come a long way musically since his Blur days. I was a big Blur fan when I was younger, and it was great to see Albarn in Vancouver. What first struck me was the integration of the musical performance with the animation and videos that were shown on a screen just above the performers. There was always something going on on-screen and on the stage. Sometimes it was a hard decision where to look. (Do I watch Albarn and Womack or Bruce Willis toss a tooth-pick out of his car window?) Highlights include Albarn running into the crowd and around the edges of the floor seats with a big white flag during the “White Flag” performance. Also, the visual sequences that accompanied “Cloud of Unknowning” really added to the impact of the song. I was really excited to hear my two super favourites right now of “Empire Ants” and “El Mañana” when they were played at the concert.
Albarn is a great performer with a lot of energy. …
