Perhaps the most surprising entry on this year's countdown, unassuming English folk rockers and all-round nice boys Mumford & Sons find themselves in second place with no fewer than 11.6 million scrobbles picked up throughout the year. They were also the year's most scrobbled artist by Last.fm listeners in the UK.
The band led by Marcus Mumford, boyfriend of singer/songwriter Laura Marling, released their debut album Sigh No More at the end of last year with a U.S. release in February. The album's folky sound is based around traditional instruments such as mandolin, banjo, accordion and double bass, a set-up that has drawn comparisons to peers Noah and the Whale.
A wave of support from radio DJs, including the BBC's Zane Lowe, and a session for Last.fm Discover nudged Mumford & Sons into the spotlight. Fans were drawn to the band's energetic and unpredictable live performances as much as their recorded output.
Gaining momentum with airplay for the single 'Little Lion Man', Mumford & Sons performed on the Late Show with David Letterman in February, attracting listeners from across the pond too. That track has now received over 1.9 million scrobbles, while third single 'The Cave' is ticking towards 1.6 million.
The band have alreadyreleased a new EP of material featuring four recordings completed in Delhi with the Rajasthani folk collective Dharohar Project and Laura Marling.
