Marshall Mathers (a.k.a. Slim Shady, a.k.a. Eminem) has been an almost permanent fixture on the musical landscape since the release of the Slim Shady LP in 1999. Always close to Dr. Dre and often backed up by D12, the 37 year old has courted controversy at every possible turn, while also releasing some of the most popular records (think 'Without Me', 'Sing For The Moment', and 'Lose Yourself' for starters) of the decade. This year the Detroit rapper dropped Relapse, the first in a series of planned returns for Mathers after a few years babysitting production at Shady Records.

Laced with the trademark skits and half-stories fans have come to know Eminem for, Relapse wasn't the instant critical success his previous albums have been: Mathers made a big deal of killing his Slim Shady persona with the release of Encore and Curtain Call, and many expected Eminem to spend longer out of the spotlight. Despite that, you've pushed tracks like 'Bagpipes from Baghdad', 'Insane' and 'Beautiful' into his most played, while lead single 'We Made You' is currently his most popular of the year, once again provoking comment from all sides (Feminists, Celebrities, Right-Wing pundits, Left-wing pundits and others all had something to say).

Relapse 2 is due in 2010.
