Depeche Mode, a band with almost 60 million total scrobbles to date, who share at least some of the responsibility for the swathe of electro-pop artists in the last decade, probably need little introduction to Last.fm listeners. 'Enjoy The Silence', 'Personal Jesus' and 'World In My Eyes' all sprang from Violator, the group's seventh studio album, and led to them becoming one of the most popular (and influential) acts of the '80s. Hailing from Essex, on the East coast of England, they now live scattered throughout the World, rich on their efforts... and yet they're not even in the Top 30 of 2009. You lot are hard to impress.
Their twelfth release, Sounds of the Universe, came out in April. More than 3/4 million of you have played it so far, and singles 'Wrong' and 'Peace' have become entrenched in the band's top tracks scrobbled this year. Album plays peaked as the Tour of the Universe began to rumble on, despite being beset by delays and rescheduled shows due to health problems and vocal rest for singer Dave Gahan.
The Tour of The Universe continues into 2010, and the band's relentless schedule of festival and stadium performances shows little sign of slowing down.
