It might have been impossible to escape Kanye West's face this year, as his MTV Awards interruption became one of the year's fastest spreading memes. West popped up all over the internet to steal the limelight and make hamfisted apologies, while even U.S. President Barack Obama branded him a jackass.
Released in November 2008, 808s and Heartbreak is the rapper's fourth studio album since his 2004 debut The College Dropout. Reportedly recorded in just three weeks, the album marked a huge departure for West as he layered the tracks with auto-tuned vocals and stuttering drum machines. Critics weren't sure what to think at first, but Last.fm listeners responded with repeat plays and loved tracks, pushing old favourite 'Jesus Walks' out of his top five tracks with new cuts 'Heartless' and 'Love Lockdown'.
Despite cancelling the 'Fame Kills' tour West has been around the world, attracting over 13,000 of you to gigs and festivals in the last twelve months. With an appearance in Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show in the works — Yo, Kanye, I'm really happy you made the top ten, and I'mma let you finish, but we just gotta check out the next artist, who had one of the top nine tracks of the year.
